MEMPHIS (IFS ) –
Russia’s all girl punk band PUSSY RIOT gets 2 years in prison
for singing on the steps of a church and protesting President Putin’s rule of
law in his attempt to put a lid on free speech.
The charges of “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred”,
(also know in America
as a “hate crime). Nadezhda Tolokonnikova,
22; Marina
Alyokhina, 24; and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 30, were
arrested for storming the steps of Moscow ’s
largest Orthodox cathedral back in February and singing an anti-Putin protest
song against the government.
Pussy Riot donned ski-masks and bright-colored spandex while
performing a “punk prayer song” during a noisy protest against President Putin who
has close ties to the church.
This clearly demonstrates Putin’s stand on protests from
anyone who opposes his government. The
music industry is totally outraged at the actions of Moscow and requests the immediate release of
these Russian musical pioneers.
This sends a shot
in the dark message to other music icons in Russia , that they better be on
their best behavior and only sing songs of the “motherland” that only will be
pleasing to the president. Only in the
early days on Woody Guthrie in America
in the 1930’s and Bob Marley before this death in the 1980’s that anyone would
get in trouble for “singing songs”.
So the “good ole” Russian boys who like drinking their vodka
and singing praises of the president will one day be in for a shocking
retaliation at the ballet box in months to come. It’s two things that governments should not
do with their citizens, one is playing with their religions and the other is
messing with their music. It’s the only
free thing that anyone person can do in their silence minds, “a song and a
pray” that’s straight from the heart.
You attack that simple form of freedom and the house of
cards do come tumbling down. It has
been demonstrated again and again in history of man, no matter what country you
are from. It’s a government’s Achilles’
heel.
In honor of the trios self sacrifice at the hands of the
“church/government” that Putin so loves, he has promised to make a Martyr out
of three girls whose music is not really that much of a protest in accordance
to western standards, but it will sell millions of downloads just because of
what they are doing.
KDTN Radio One’s music station will be one of those
supporters of the Pussy Riot’s music and will play their music until they are
released from prison. On the KDTN Radio
